Environmental Benefits Of Paper Recycling

In honour of Global Recycling Day this year, we must consider the benefits of recycled paper.

The Global Recycling Foundation will hold its fifth annual Global Recycling Day on 18th March to raise awareness about the circular economy and the importance of a cleaner environment.

The Secret Eco Warrior

When it comes to recycling, one material comes out on top: paper. Europe has a current recycling rate of 74%, compared North America (66%) and Asia (54%). Considering that paper has a theoretical maximum recycling rate of 74%, which is a fantastic achievement despite certain paper products retained (books, archived documents, etc) or used in non-recyclable products like sanitary products or insulation.

Prospering In A Pandemic

A major success story for recycled paper is in packaging. Covid-19 saw a rapid acceleration in online shopping over the past 2 years which has result in increased demand for paper and cardboard. When some industries struggled, the packaging industry reported increased volumes and revenue, in part, due to a surge in online shopping. E-commerce transactions in the UK, in May 2019 saw a 168% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Changing Attitudes and Behaviours

In addition to its high recycling rate, there’s another key advantage to cardboard packaging: people like it. A recent survey discovered that 79% preferring it for being home compostable, 55% saying it’s better for the environment, and 51% saying it’s easier to recycle.

People are more aware of company’s commitment to sustainability. A study by the Chartered Institute of Marketing found 78% of consumers think larger companies can be doing more to promote sustainable packaging. In addition to pressuring businesses to take more responsibility for the environment, consumers have started changing their own habits, with the number of people reusing packaging doubling from 12% to 25%.
