Meet the Health and Safety Team
Mick Walsh – Preston
Mick joined Board24 in 1997 and started work in the reel stores department, shortly after joining the company he became a member of the site safety committee. In 2008 Mick moved into his role and studied at Preston College, where he was awarded the NEBOSH National General Certificate. Mick then went onto study at Blackpool and Fylde College where he was awarded NVQ Level 4 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice certificate and is also a Graduate Member of IOSH.
Mick’s biggest achievement to date within the business was overseeing the health and safety procedures of the Preston sites extension and BHS corrugator installation, which involved monitoring numerous contracting companies and their employee’s activities. From a safety perspective the installation was a success with no major incidents reported.
Michelle Gaddess – Coalville
Michelle joined the Coalville site as the Health & Safety and BRC Advisor in November 2015, having previously worked in a print and mail environment, ensuring compliance against ISO accredited standards including the health and safety management system.
Michelle has worked in a health and safety related role for the past seven years and attained the NEBOSH general certification in 2012, after realising health and safety was the direction she wanted to pursue alongside auditing of the ISO standards across the manufacturing sites within the business.
Since joining the Board24 team she has been learning about the business and the site processes to enable continuous improvement of the health and safety and BRC systems and procedures in place, whilst progressing with the required actions in a collaborative approach. Michelle is enjoying the challenge of the new role and working alongside the teams at Coalville to promote and build on the positive safety culture in place.
Gordon King – Larkhall
Gordon is a Chemical Engineer with over 14 years’ experience within industry, later diversifying into the health and safety field, obtaining his NEBOSH certificate in 2005. He has had some interesting jobs in the past including the whisky industry, the explosives industry and a chocolate factory. Each one bringing its own unique challenges and experiences.
Starting with Board24 Larkhall in April 2016, Gordon has settled well into the Health and Safety/BRC role at Larkhall, and has also been providing health and safety support at Boxes and Packaging Glasgow and Dumbarton. He has brought in a lot of fresh ideas which are making the site(s) safer and improving the safety culture onsite.
Gordon brings with him a lot of experience in safe working practises in high risk industries and has started to put these good practices in place at Larkhall, and then Glasgow and Dumbarton, and is sharing this with the rest of the group.
David Grainger – Group
David Grainger returned to the Logson Group, on a full time basis in January 2015 as Health, Safety & Environment Manager. There have been some considerable successes within this time throughout the group, not least the installation of a new corrugator at Board24 Preston, the relocation of Boxes and Packaging Swindon and an additional site at Doncaster, Cambridge and Glasgow.
“As a Group, we continue in our attempts to improve health and safety, in line with ever changing legislation and industry best practice however, health and safety committees across the sites have a role to play in identifying where improvements can be made at site level. These improvements may be in machinery safety, workplace transport, slips, trips and falls or managing contractors when on site.
“Our Health and Safety team keep pace with current legislation and place Health and Safety as a priority and has robust policies which all members of the team are expected to adhere to without exception.”
