Staff Profile – Gordon MacArthur

Gordon MacArthur, Sales Director at Board24 Larkhall has been with the company for 23 years and has witnessed many changes during this time – starting as Sales Manager to his current role as Sales Director.

Gordon has a strong background in manufacturing and industry sales. His career began in 1980 with United Glass, working in internal sales dealing with customers in the whisky industry. A change of industry in 1984, resulted in taking on jobs in Sales Administration and Product Manager at Caberboard, manufacturers of engineered wood-based panel products, including Chipboard and MDF. The role also involved handling exports of MDF to customers in Scandinavia and the Benelux countries.

After 11 years he left to join the Board24 team. When he initially joined the company it was under the ownership of Crown Corrugated, then Dansico. Mondi became the owners in 2001 until Board24 took over in 2008. During his time as Sales Director at Larkhall, he and his team have grown the business. He has developed and expanded the customer base by leveraging his experience and knowledge.

Over the years he has gained valuable experience and enjoyed seeing the company progress; working at different plants. This included a couple of years commuting to Kettering during the Danisco ownership, covering UK sales and even for a couple of short spells, helped Coalville sales – covering sheet plant customers in the UK, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

On a day to day basis, Gordon enjoys the variety that his job brings, working alongside a well-established team and having the involvement throughout the business from sales to production to transport. Together with his colleague Stevie (Production Manager), they ensure the plant works tirelessly to ensure customers’ requirements are achieved. He also takes pride in supporting his team to ensure they fulfil their potential, whether it is in their role, through training or further qualifications.

Over the years, board grades have developed and product offering has increased. Larkhall also specialise in barrier coated board grades, ideal for moisture and grease resistance, which are being used in food and non-food industries. For transport packaging it improves compression and stacking strength and protects the goods from outside humidity.

Gordon enjoys working with customers, spending time building relationships and understanding their requirements as their businesses grow, develop and evolve; business needs change, along with quality expectations creating new challenges.

Gordon comments; “Building a great customer support culture makes a difference in today’s changing market place. We are always striving to provide the highest quality in terms of service levels.”

When Gordon is not managing the packaging needs of his customers, he enjoys keeping active. An early riser he can often be found in the gym or pool at 6am. The early starts come from the years his two sons were taking part in competitive swimming and triathlon, so early morning training became the norm. If starting the day off with a burst of energy wasn’t enough, he also likes to join his mates at the weekend for a game of 5-a-side football or getting out on his road bike.
