Staff Profile – Peter Sparrow

Peter Sparrow is the Reel Stores and Utility Team Leader at Board24, a role he has been in for over three years, prior to this he was a Clamp Truck Operator and Double Backer Operator.

This is Peter’s second time with the business, he did start working at the Coalville site in his mid-20 for nine years under the ownership of Model Board and Mondi Board, before leaving for 12 years. During his 12 years away, he worked for a Commercial, Industrial and Contract cleaning company working his way to Site Manager on the commercial and industrial side of the business.

Since being back with Board24 he has just completed the course by AITT in Managing Forklift Operations to manage the safe use of FLT’s on site, he has taken inhouse BRCGS training, taking on the role of BRCGS Deputy on site to maintain standards and procedures expected by the accreditation. The impact of Covid has added a disruption to off-site training, which he greatly looks forward to changing.

Peter explains a day at Board24; “There is not really such a thing as an average day. Due to the job role, it is a very varied position, one of the reasons the role was so appealing. The reels stores are a small department with some highly experienced staff, so the day to day running of the reel store is helped by this. Other duties include monitoring of Health and Safety within the department, stock control, checking incoming deliveries and waste collections from site, making sure the clamp trucks are maintained by our provider and perimeter maintenance of the site.”

The variety of the role is what is his favourite part of about working at Board24, that and the group of people he works with. No two days are the same and throughout the day the role requires flexibility so never gets boring.

One of his fondest memory of being at Board24 is returning after 12 years to find so many of the staff had not changed, not only was this reassuring, but also a great achievement for a company to retain the same staff for so long, making it a welcoming return.

Peter is married with 11-year-old twins (one of each) and a family pet, Ernie the dog (Puggle), he is kept busy keeping up with family activities which can be hectic, but fun. He particularly loves plenty of family time dog walking and likes reading books on Science and Astronomy. We he does have abit of spare time he enjoys DIY projects around the home and garden.

Outside of work Peter is an Assistant Coach for his son’s Football Team (Ibstock Utd. Juniors FC under 11 Pumas), which only started as a short-term role to keep the team together, after losing a Head Coach, he is still doing it five years on, (even though a new Head Coach joined us). He thoroughly enjoys it and thinks it is great to be part of such a close-knit team and a really supportive group of parents (The Pumas Family). Although the team may not be a top division team, he has never seen such a group of players put in so much effort, which is rewarding to see how it has developed the players on and off the pitch.
