As we move further into the 21st century, reflecting on the progress and challenges of the last 25 years underscores the transformative impact of technology and shifting global priorities. Among these changes, the corrugated packaging industry has thrived, driven by growing awareness of the environmental consequences of hard-to-recycle materials and single-use plastics.
In the face of ongoing political and economic uncertainty, Frank Hay, Group Managing Director at Board24, shares his insights into what 2025 holds for the corrugated industry and the pivotal role Board24 is set to play.
The UK Economy: A Static Outlook
Although I’m not an economist, the prevailing sentiment among businesses is that 2025 will be a year of limited economic growth. The uncertainty surrounding policy decisions, coupled with the lingering effects of the October budget, continues to create challenges. Businesses remain apprehensive about potential cuts or increases, keeping the economic landscape unpredictable.
For the corrugated sector, this translates to a competitive and challenging year ahead. While food and beverage, along with e-commerce, are expected to maintain positive momentum, industrial sectors are likely to face stagnation.
The Corrugated Industry in 2025
Last year saw significant global movements within the corrugated packaging industry, with a series of major mergers and acquisitions. Notably, International Paper’s acquisition of DS Smith and Smurfit Kappa’s merger with WestRock to form Smurfit WestRock reshaped the market. Additionally, Logson Group, which includes Board24, expanded its portfolio by acquiring Challenge Packaging as part of its strategic investment initiatives.
Amid these changes, Logson Group remains uniquely positioned as a proudly independent operator. Unlike larger vertically integrated manufacturers, this independence provides agility and resilience, ensuring adaptability to market shifts.
Looking ahead, the introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) payments and the intensification of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments will be significant drivers for change. Businesses aiming to meet sustainability targets will increasingly transition to corrugated packaging as a more environmentally friendly alternative.
Board24: Building on Success
As the UK’s largest independent sheet feeder, Board24 plays a vital role in supplying corrugated board to sheet plants nationwide. Reflecting on 2024, it was a year of consolidation and growth, marked by the opening of our new Eurocentral facility in Scotland—home to the UK’s newest corrugator.
Key leadership changes have further strengthened our organisation, setting the stage for continued success. Looking forward, we aim to empower our people, enhance our processes, and expand our production capabilities through focused investments in three key areas:
- Our People
Investing in our workforce remains a top priority. While our apprenticeship and leadership development programs have been highly successful, we recognise the value of experienced team members who may not seek management roles. By adopting a “process expert” approach, we aim to leverage their expertise, drive operational efficiencies, and support their professional growth within the company. - Our Processes
Through process audits, we’ve identified opportunities to improve quality, efficiency and reduce our environmental impact. These efforts include optimising resources that we use—such as electricity and heat, Enhanced workflows and internal processes will drive sustainability while improving the overall customer experience. - Our Production Capabilities
Significant investments are underway to upgrade our machinery and facilities. At our Preston site, major enhancements to Corrugator 3 are already delivering promising results. Additional improvements at our Coalville facility will further streamline operations, boost customer satisfaction, and align with our sustainability goals.
A Bright Future
These strategic investments reflect our unwavering commitment to delivering value for our customers, fostering growth and opportunities for our employees, and developing dynamic partnerships throughout the supply chain.
For our customers, this means a partner who is deeply invested in solving challenges, driving innovation, and supporting their success. For our team, it means being part of a forward-thinking organisation that prioritises professional development and long-term stability.
As we enter 2025, Board24 is poised to remain the UK’s largest independent manufacturer of corrugated sheet board, delivering on our promise of quality, reliability, and innovation.
